about alchemy

Alchemy, the ancient practice of transmuting base metals into gold, was reinterpreted by Carl Jung as a profound metaphor for psychological transformation. Jung saw the alchemical process as a symbolic representation of the psyche's journey toward wholeness, where the stages of material refinement corresponded to stages of inner spiritual growth. For Jung, alchemy provided a rich language and imagery for the unconscious processes encountered in the individuation journey—the lifelong quest for integrating the different facets of the Self into a cohesive, authentic whole.
The Four Stages of Alchemy—nigredo/melanosis (blackening), albedo/leucosis (whitening), citrinitas/xanthosis (yellowing), and rubedo/iosis (reddening)—serve as symbolic markers of psychological development.
These stages are not literal chemical processes but metaphors for the refinement of the inner life, guiding one through cycles of breakdown, purification, maturation, and unification.
The nigredo represents the initial phase of confronting inner chaos or darkness, where unconscious content surfaces and disrupts the existing sense of order. Albedo follows, symbolizing a stage of purification, where clarity emerges and insights begin to awaken. Citrinitas marks the maturation of consciousness, integrating the newfound insights and moving toward greater inner cohesion. Finally, rubedo represents the unification of opposites, where the conscious and unconscious harmonize, bringing about a state of embodied wholeness.
In my practice of Archetypal Coaching, these stages provide a useful framework for conceptualizing personal transformation. By applying the symbolism of alchemy, clients are guided through their unique inner processes, allowing them to engage more consciously with their struggles and aspirations. This approach not only aids in overcoming difficulties but also facilitates the discovery of latent potentials and the realization of one’s life path. Through this lens, the alchemical journey mirrors the search for the Philosopher’s Stone—a metaphor for achieving psychological wholeness and uncovering the true Self.

"Throughout the life cycle, our unique combinations of archetypal potentials increasingly express themselves in our behavior. They move form being purely spiritual potentials to being concretely realized in time and space. This means that throughout our life cycle, we continuously incarnate spirit."
